If you want the slim, modern wall-mountable excitement of a flat-panel HDTV, you’re probably debating between LCD and Plasma. The head-to-head comparison below can help you see the potential pros and cons more clearly.

LCD TVPlasma TV

Pros

  • Available in large and smaller sizes that quality Plasma brands don’t offer
  • Built-in PC-compatible connectors allow LCDs to do double-duty as computer monitors
  • Very few glare or washout issues; a great option even in brightly lit conditions
  • Run cooler and require less power to operate than Plasmas

Pros

  • Available in sizes over 37”
  • Color depth and clarity — many viewers describe the picture as “richer” than LCD
  • Higher contrast ratios, better black levels and better subtle color shading in dark scenes
  • Excellent pixel-response; action scenes don’t blur

Cons

  • Slightly worse black-level performance; newer models selectively turn off backlight to create darker blacks
  • Slightly slower pixel response may blur fast-moving images
  • Hard knocks can break crystals and create permanent dark spots; can develop stuck pixels which appear as bright points of light
  • Recalibration may be required as aging backlight slightly shifts color

Cons

  • Much heavier than same-sized LCDs, harder to move and can require professional installation
  • May require more energy to run and output more heat than LCDs
  • Some models may show screen burn-in from static images common on news channels, sports broadcasts and in gaming

LCD is Better For

  • Dedicated gamers
  • Avid computer users
  • Those who have brightly lit rooms

Plasma is Better For

  • Rich color experience, darker rooms
  • Those who want a large set
